SPECIAL PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT:

“Date Night is BACK, Without the Extra Costs!”

WELCOME to the CARE SHARE program, spearheaded by Brittany (Nate’s Mom) you now have an opportunity to have fellow parents be your babysitter for a couple hours while you enjoy a date night out for example, and then in the recent future, return the favor!  Complete with a manageable calendar for all interested participants to fill in their availability & contact information, it’s a reliable, resourceful way to have a night out and feel comfortable with whom your child is with while returning the favor to another family when you are available.

Care-Sharing is where moms swap babysitting duties instead of paying the neighborhood teen to watch their infant.  Since we have a great group of moms around DayOne, we may have a great opportunity to support each other through Care-Sharing based on where we live or where the date is going to be!”      --Brittany (Nate’s Mom)

Music Together is the internationally recognized music and movement classes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers along with the grown-ups who love them.
Our family-style classes expose children to a rich variety of musical experiences, letting them explore music at their own level, whatever their age or stage of development.

Music Together classes provide you with playful, engaging ways for you and your child to come together and interact musically. With this kind of interaction, your child learns that music is fun and his or her musical skills start to form. You'll hear your child sing to herself (maybe after class is long over!) and see her bounce, rock or jump to the beat. You'll watch your baby experience the vibrations he feels on the big drum, or see his excited reaction to his favorite song.
Music education benefits all areas of learning from language and math skills, to small and large motor abilities and even social and emotional development.
Visit
http://www.musictogether.com/Home to find your nearest location and schedule your free preview class!

Music Together will be offering Free Demonstration Classes again in June, we’ll announce it with June’s newsletter.  Meanwhile, please click on the logo/link above to find a Music Together class nearest you!

Tuesday, May 18th:  3:30 pm Cooking Club’s 6th Meeting!  Theme: Fruit Dishes

New members welcome!  Email: China (chinaharvey1@gmail.com)           (Details on Community Baby)

Love to cook?  Better yet, love to eat?  Join our new cooking club!

Here's how it would work:  First you would RSVP that you would like to join.  Then once a month, whoever volunteers to host will choose a theme (Mediterranean food, holiday meal, vegetarian—whatever the host would like).

The host will send out an Evite where those attending will sign up for which course they would like to make--entree, side, appetizer, dessert, special drink, etc.  Then you will bring your completed dish (or almost completed--you may have some finishing touches to do) to the host’s house, along with your recipe.

There we will enjoy a fantastic dinner, share our great recipes, and have some nice conversation!  You don't have to be a great cook.  Making an easy dish that other moms can make on a weeknight would be great.  Or you can go all out and experiment with fancy new recipes.  All are welcome!

If you're interested in joining, email China (Chloe’s Mom) chinaharvey1@gmail.com

2:30-6:30 pm Miniature Custom Show: Tammie Knight’s Specialty!
Can’t Miss Event! (Details under Home Page)

Tammie Knight (tammiemk@sbcglobal.net) will be showcasing her unique miniature room boxes on Saturday, May 22nd at giggle at 1359 N. Main St., Walnut Creek, from 2:30 – 6:30 pm.

This is absolutely a 'Can't Miss Event'. Since Tammie was a young girl she has tinkered with all things small for countless hours. As a teenager she spent weekend after weekend visiting the Museum of the City of New York’s top floor (where the dollhouses lived). She even convinced a Madison Avenue dollhouse shop that miniatures were in her blood and in spite of her complete lack of retail experience they should hire her...and they did. Some of her most notable clients were Gene Wilder, Marlo Thomas, Dustin Hoffman, Donald Trump (she assisted in the creation of Ivanka Trump’s dollhouse), and Sotheby’s New York, to name a few.

Included here are several of the miniature cribs that Tammie creates, and many will be available at the show! Cribs can be purchased individually or as part of miniature room or scene.  Prices range from $45 - $450, and with the variety of styles and colors there is something for everyone, from modern to traditional design.

If it exists in life-size scale, Tammie can duplicate it. If it exists in someone’s imagination, she can bring it to life. Her favorite miniature room themes are nurseries and children’s rooms; however, she has also created rooms of every category from birthday parties and bridal showers to wine cellars and backyard bar-b-ques.

Please feel free to send this email to friends and other groups who may be interested in attending. Sweet treats and mini-munchies will be served and all are welcomed.  If you can't make the event and would like to contact Tammie for more information please do so my e-mailing her at tammiemk@sbcglobal.net. If you plan to attend the event, Tammie will be offering a 20% discount for any purchases made at the show and any orders placed during that time. Additionally, all participants who mention Hilarie’s Helpful Hints will be entered into a raffle drawing (at a cost of $5 per entry, with a chance to win a wonderful miniature nursery!)

The raffle prize is a small, very sweet, gender-neutral baby's nursery, in soft shades of yellow & light green. This miniature makes the perfect gift for a baby shower or to celebrate the arrival of a precious little one. The room includes a dressed crib with teddy bear, a rocking chair, and an accessory filled changing table. Raffle tickets will cost $5 each, and the retail value of this miniature is $250.

Lango is a Spanish, French and Mandarin immersion program for kids. We believe children acquire language best through their natural way of learning, PLAY! If you consider how your child began acquiring (and may still be acquiring) their language skills, you’ll probably recognize that play, mimicry and song were all a part of their learning. Our structured curriculum includes games, music, art, stories and dramatic play, all in the chosen language. We teach summer camps, after school programs (pre-school and elementary) and community-based classes. Visit www.LangoKids.com/regions/contra-costa  for more information. Classes are pro-rated for late enrollment.

We have recently opened up onto the international stage with classes in China, using the Lango Method to teach English. While play is at the core of our curriculum, we also know significant studies have reported that studying a foreign language over an extended period of time has been shown to accelerate cognitive development, resulting in higher math and English grades later in life, as well as higher SAT scores. That may be something that is important to you, or for many others it is simply the wonderful sounds of another language spoken or the idea of making future travel for their little ones easier. Our teachers are mostly native speakers and all have a sincere love of children.  Our classes are typically 45 minutes of instruction, one or two times per week. We believe language skills are retained best when they are encouraged at home, so we make class materials such as storybooks, flashcards, puppet Cosmo Dog (our language helper) and language-specific music available for purchase as well.

Below is a little more info about our METHOD & CAMPS:

At LANGO we use many levels of learning and multiple senses to help children understand and retain a new language. In a typical class they will see, hear and touch the things they are learning. If the lesson is "in" and "out", they will experience in and out in a variety of ways, maybe through parachute play or walking through rings or seeing the puppet Cosmo Dog work through an action. We call this "Adventure Learning" and this approach draws on various methods of teaching languages, including Total Physical Response, the Rassias Method and Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Taken in combination, these methods suggest that kids learn best when their entire person is involved–not just listening and speaking, but moving, singing, dancing, playing, feeling, creating and solving problems. At Camp Lango, we take Adventure Learning a step further, as kids follow the adventures of our characters the Lango Kids, and then go on their own "adventures," challenging activities that they feel great about completing.

Visit http://www.musictogether.com/Home to find your nearest location and schedule your free preview class!

Music Together will be offering Free Demonstration Classes again in June, we’ll announce it with June’s newsletter.  Meanwhile, please click on the logo/link above to find a Music Together class nearest you!

Care Share

Date night is back with no extra costs!

Care Coordinator: Brittany Steward

mbsteward@gmail.com or 925-349-4441

Care Share is an opportunity for parents to exchange child care services with one another.  This works if everyone participating is willing to provide care as well as receive care from other parents.  Imagine, we can go out on date night and not have to worry about the extra expenses of child care!  Plus, we have learned more about each other and our babies at DayOne than most people get to know the local teenage babysitter!  So, why not Care Share?!

As easy as 1-2-3:

1. Contact the Care Coordinator with dates/times you are available to provide care or when you request care.

2. The Care Coordinator update the calendar to reflect what is available.  Updates will be posted on Hilarie’s website.  The Care Coordinator will also contact the providers/requesters as needed.

3. From there, it is in the hands of the parent who is requesting care to work out the fine details with the care provider who is available to watch their child(ren).

Care Share Ethics:

Please respect one another and our babies.

Protect contact and child information; please do not distribute info to others without permission from our participating parents.

If you ask for care, you commit to providing care.

This program is still an infant (ha!)  Suggestions are welcomed and encouraged.

Cooking Club Inviting Members!

If you're interested in joining, email me at chinaharvey1@gmail.com.

Book Club Inviting Members!

Looking for an excuse to NOT read that ‘baby related’ book?  Need an evening out to converse with other adults?  Join our Book Club and don’t worry, no baby related books allowed!

Once a month, the first week of the month will be the timeframe for each Book Club Meeting.  At each meeting, the next date will be decided and the Host will select the next book to be read and the time that works best for them.  The Host will be responsible for drinks and appetizers for that meeting.  We will all take turns, so come join in the fun!  If you cannot make some of the meetings, that’s okay! Just email me that you would like to join so that you are on the “Exclusive BOOK CLUB List!”

The Chef & Mini Chef’s Corner!

Did you all know we have a Chef in our midst?  Nancy (Sasha’s Mom) will be kindly contributing recipes that are YUMMY for Adults and also can be converted to be just as YUMMY for Kids!  She’ll share a recipe ONCE a month and throughout the month, anyone  who would like to also share their recipes, please email them to me at hilarie_hsu@hotmail.com AND post them on Discussion Baby!

From the Mouth of the Chef!

This month’s recipe is:   Smoked Salmon Sandwiches

Smoked Salmon Sandwiches

1 french baguette

Garlic clove

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Chives

1/4 Cup Mascarpone

Caramelized onion( Saute 1-2 yellow onions for about 20 min. with salt and a little butter)

capers

Lemon

Smoked Salmon

Cut your baguette down the middle and into three-four sandwich sizes. Brush with olive oil and rub with your garlic clove.  Grill or bake in oven until lightly brown at 300 degrees, about 8-10 minutes.

In a bowl, mix mascarpone with a little salt, pepper and finely chopped chives and a little lemon zest.

Once your baguette has cooled a bit, assemble your sandwich. First spread a layer of mascarpone mixture then caramelized onions. Last, lay your smoked salmon and sprinkle with capers and a squeeze of lemon juice.

You may want to add some arugula for an added touch to your baguette sandwich.

LEARNING BABY

Email LangoKids@gmail.com for a free trial or more information.

(new!) STORYTIME!! (new!)

Lango and giggle are teaming up to add storytime at their Walnut Creek location! Bring your little (or big) ones for a free storytime in Spanish, French or Mandarin. Contact LangoKids@gmail.com for more information.
